I love good bread. When I moved to Mallorca in 2017 this was one thing I definitely missed on the island. Fortunately, a few bakeries have opened in the last few years that sell delicious bread. I’ll show you my top 3 bakeries in Palma de Mallorca, all of them located in Santa Catalina.
1. Bread with love at Thomas’ Bakeshop – No. 1 of all bakeries in Palma
Our favourite of all sourdough bakeries in Palma: Thomas’ Bakeshop in Santa Catalina. The owners, Austrian baker Thomas Grasberger and his Lebanese wife Michelle, opened the artisan bakery next to Santa Catalina’s market hall in April 2017. The warm welcome when entering the small shop is one of the reasons why I like the bakery so much. Some of the other reasons are the Pan Centeno (mixed bread with 70% rye and 30% wheat), the Pan Italiano (a 100% wheat bread with a soft interior, large holes and a crispy crust) and the Pain au Chocolat (so delicious!). Lola loves the Pan Espelta Integral, a spelt bread which is rather soft and easy to chew. Thomas’ bakehouse is in Santa Maria del Camí, open for pick up with preorder.
2. Pan Comido – Selected Swedish bakery products
Just on the other side of the market hall in Santa Catalina you will find the small bakery shop of Pan Comido. Swedish owner Lisa opened the shop in September 2019. She sells an exquisite selection of bakery products of the Swedish baker Mattias Mårtensson who has a bakery called Fika Farina, located in Palma’s centre. The sourdough baguette is probably the most richtest I’ve ever tasted. The Pan Integral (dark rye bread) is the perfect choice for a “real German bread time” in the evening.
3. Perfectionism and quality at Palma Bread
Flour from Sweden, French butter and never compromising quality – these are the secrets behind the delicious treats of Palma Bread. The Swedish couple Solweig Gejler and Jeff Carling opened the bakery in June 2019. Now have a team of 13 people including 4 bakers. Their speciality are the cinnamon buns (I have never seen any that are so perfectionistically wound) and the Swedish Semla, a sweet cardamom bun with a heavenly almond cream filling. Palma Bread has a second shop in Cala Major and rumour has it that there will soon be another shop ;))
