The NIE number is a Spanish foreigner’s identity number (Número de Identidad de Extranjero). Indeed, you can apply for it even if your main residence is not in Spain. You need a NIE number in Mallorca if you want to work or buy a property here for example. However, if you want to become a Spanish resident you need to get registered in the central register of foreigners. Then you will get the registration certificate, known as tarjeta residencia, which will be linked to your NIE number.
